Ubud, an essential Bali detour
The town of Ubud lies in Bali’s uplands at the centre of the island and is an excellent place to learn more about Balinese culture. First, there’s an ancient Hindu temple complex inhabited by a large colony of mischievous monkeys and macaques. After this, you can stroll along through the art galleries and the many gift shops on Jalan Raya Ubud, the main shopping street. Then there’s the Royal Palace Puri Saren Agung which hosts evening performances of Balinese traditional dance. To help you absorb the spiritual atmosphere of this wonderful place, just watch the graceful movements of the dancers and let the delightful music of the gamelan wash over you.
Meet the Lovina dolphins
Lovina Beach is a world famous spot for seeing dolphins in the wild. The animals that you will get to see here are mostly long-nosed spinner dolphins. They visit the warm, shallow waters of Lovina Beach almost every day where they can be seen playing together. Local fishermen will take you aboard their traditional Balinese boats at dawn on a dolphin spotting trip. Turtle Island also offers more dolphin excursions.
Tirta Empul: purify yourself in the holy waters
From Ubud, it takes about half an hour to get to Manukaya near Tampaksiring. This small village is home to the famous Pura Tirta Empul temple, the "Holy Water Spring", one of the jewels of Bali. Balinese people make pilgrimages to bathe in the temple water, which is said to purify body and soul. It’s a place to get rid of negative energy and experience purification, good health and prosperity.
